Eric Waterfall Interviews Tono of MOTOSHOP TONOUCHI.
After posting Numa’s xs-half-fairing, Eric shot me an e-mail to say that he speaks Japanese and would be willing to help out with some translating. He was able to get in contact with Tono of MOTOSHOP TONOUCHI to get the scoop on this sick XS650 CHOPPER. If you guys dig this one I think Eric may be doing another Guest post soon.
Eric Waterfall - We have material! I called Tono the other day to see if anything was going on and he was quite apologetic. He totally spaced sending me the info and pics. I got this this morning. Though there isnt much info in the email, over the phone he said there is an XS650 “mania” going on in Japan right now.

What a sick ride – I really love it!
I know this bike & I love it!
painting, fork, bars , rear wheel…
I’d like to tell Ted more japanese XS choppers!
Man another sick xs! Looks like a zero strech hardail section…
This is is one of the greatest XS’s built I have seen…so sick.
Gnarly bike! I have a few xs’s I’d like to sell!
Way Cool !!!
is that a bolt on hardtail?!
That paint is sick… nice bike!
AWSOME!! Not a thing wrong with it! A PERFECT 650!!!!!
wow! never better!
WOW, truly perfect proportions!!
I wonder what a finished build goes for over there. I am assuming 8-10K American. CRAZY
Is this there any way to find out what the strech on this bike is?
Please do a feature on his XS400…. Very talented builder!!!
WOW 3-5k for an xs650 thats crazy I bought one of mine for 500 bux and the other for 550 both in real good running condition.. This bike is really nice I like the handle bars and the tank and the paint
I wonder if that are “starburst” moon discs on the rear wheel? Please tell, and if – what size/diameter?
Two thumbs up all the way, in my top five for sure. I would also like some info on those disks. Great job!
Blackwidow-”WOW 3-5k for an xs650 thats crazy” That is exactly what I said to Eric. I think I know what you’re thinking though, you wouldn’t be able to make any money exporting. Import duties and shipping would kill it. haha.
reynoldburton- I am not sure, but I think the discs are custom-made. Check out MOTOSHOP TONOUCHI blog. The links up top.
that is a beautiful bike.
Your wrong Ted I was offered 4500 for the blackwidow and I said no way. Right now I love my bikes and don’t want to sell them for nothing
Thanks Ted, but my Japanese is even worse than my english
I thought it could be these discs:
For sure customized to fit on the bikes wheel!
I am glad to feature my motorcycle.
Thanks a lot of comments!
I make a new XS650, check HP.
Thanks!

wow nice bike love the rear chain cover and the tach and did any body notice the sweet set up on the front brake cable to hyd disk nice job on that id love to see some better pics keep up the great work over there
Yeah that front brake is killer. I can’t get enough of this one.
@reynoldburton- I think you are right on with the mooneyes hubs.
@TONO- Thanks for taking the time to talk with Eric, I’m sure you’re mad busy. It is really cool to see what’s going on in Japan.
anyone else notice that it looks like the whole hardtail is a bolt on affair? maybe to switch it back to suspension for inspections?
I believe it is a bolt-on hardtail. Look at his blog. I cant read japaneese but it does say xs650 and has a whole bolton section. You can see where it bolts on in the pic of the bike matches that section on his blog.
Scotty
@ CAPTAIN AWESOME
I noticed the appearance of a bolt on section to. If you look close by the key ignition under the seat is a little dots where he could be sliding in a connection. I guess I will have to learn Japanese and ask TONO.
i would seriously like to see that brake setup. super clean
I just confirmed that it is illegal in Japan to ride a hardtail motorcycle on public roads. So, it makes sense that it is a bolt-on hardtail.
definitely one of my faves- the stance is perfect and I love the compact look. Next XS I build will have no stretch for sure!
Tono I just saw pics of your “EGOISTIC BLACK” bike in Another World Of Chopper magazine, I have to Say I think I like it Just a little bit more than “Hippy Zippy” bike. Keep up the awesome builds, your bikes are sick.
One of the best xs650 builds I,ve seen on this site.
Of the ones I’ve seen thus far, this is by far my fav.
Love the look of this bike, and I’m really interested in the risers he used. Anyone know who makes them or where they can be found? I looked on Tono’s website, but didn’t find any info there.
looks like a cable opirated front disk brake, no master cylinder. Iv never seen one of these on a motorcycle, only on cheap mountain bikes. How are they for stopping
killer looking ride, I’m starting one of my own very soon from a ’72 XS2. I can’t wait, and I hope it turns out half as good as yours.
I thought it was a cable operated disc brake at first too (they were on the Honda CT200s) when I saw the naked handlebars, but as I continued to watch, it does seem like there is a resivoir hidden behind the front rails of the frame. But it looks like maybe a cable operates the resivoir?
I would love any insight on this. Does anyone know?
