Grim Wizard Rephased XS650

The Grim Wizard.  Its a 1979 XS650 ,I started out with a bone stock 78 xs650  rode it for a week before i tore it down deciding to change things with the help and guidance of my great friend Blu. We stuck it in a stock frame that had a tc bros hard tail, changed the stock front end to a DNA springer with a 21″ wide glide wheel ,ran a 16″ drum xs wheel for the rear,i put a Lowbrow Customs mustang tank that i messed up painting so i primed it brown and added some gold leaf to it.The bike lasted like this for maybe month before i decided to tear it down again and start over.

I then bought, traded and tattooed my ass off for a few things to change it up. A big k/q seat, another tank painted by Lemon, chrome fender ,super narrow  trees and a spool wheel from Warren of Jr Cycles ,the bars are from Kevin “Teach” Bass , the sporty legs i shaved down with hand files for about 2 weeks (find a friend with a lathe if you decide to do the same),my friend Robby made the hipster killer sissy bar,the other cobra seat from Harp,Chad from Shop 102 made my pipes that rip your eardrums hearing the rumble and welded in the mostercraftsman tensioner.

With a lot of research me and Skip figured out how to put an old harley 16″ wheel with disc brakes on it to help the stoping since i was running the spool up front. After a ridding it most of the year like this i started having a few problems with it .The stock charging system crapped out on me and left me sitting . With enough mishaps I wanted to make this bike bulletproof so i could ride with the least problems.  After lots of interweb surfing i found a video of Hugh’s Rephased XS from Hugh’s HandBuilt and thats when it all clicked for me.

My buddy Mitch and I took the 79 motor down  that i had laying around and rebuilt it with all the goods from Hugh’s Handbuilt. Full PMA charging system with a rephased 277 crank and cam, added the 5th gear od, Pamco ignition with dyna coils, and re-jetted  the stock carbs. It was a beast of an xs by the time we were done with it. If you like ripping through the mountains rephasing is the way to go.

This bike has come a long way from its original state,it took just about 2 1/2 years to get to this point since i kept changing it every few months.Like any bike its always changing and evolving ,at least thats the case with me since i can’t decide on anything.  None of it would have been possible without the help of all friends. The bike was has now been stripped down to just a motor and frame sold and getting a new facelift yet again. You can see old pics of it in process here http://taintedscriblins.blogspot.com

That looks like a wicked wizzard alright.

  4. fanoboss says:

That lower back support of the K&Q seat looks real comfy. I’m not a fan of re-phasing, only because I really like how my motor runs, but the other upgrades has me green with envy. Rock-On XS’ers

    Wow. Just, WOW.

  6. turdherder says:

Hallelujah!!!! Were up and running again, I was pretty bummed out. By the way, nice build!

  7. El Gaucho says:

I’m still on the fence with re-phasing. I want to try it, but I just don’t know if it’ll be worth the trouble and or money. Hmmmmm…… I have heard very convincing arguments from both sides too.

  8. mike lytle says:

@ El Goucho…….why not just go find a used newer triumph??????/ they are 270 cranks from the factory……to me an xs 650 should stay 360……they have lasted this long in the 360 configuration……chopin is one thing….not that much money for what you end up with, 270 crank/cam/ignition change, in my opinion not worth the bucks……just sayin…….

Was really hoping for a bang out LSD trip, but Ted’s spell still has me hooked. The re-phased wizard should be sounding sweet with a little reduction in vibes. Has anyone posted a vid with good audio of a 270 purring. I would of liked to have seen the beast with the springer up front.

  10. PlugHead says:

Nice chop, definitely a throw back to the 70’s. I dig it! VIVA, XS650CHOPPER.COM!

  11. El Gaucho says:

I can’t afford a triumph, lol. Even the OIF ones around here bring bucks.

  12. Alan says:

thanks everybody,, that seat has amazing back support, kinda like riding on a lazyboy couch, best seat i have ever sat on.Long springer was an option i thought about, but just decided to leave it for another bike. As far as rephasing goes, yeah it’s a little expensive but isn’t anything you do to hop up a motor to enhance it??? To each his/her own, i just know i did it to mine and it kicked ass,and worth all the work.. i have a short clip of my bike running ill post it on my blog for y’all to enjoy.

  13. Bill says:

Nice write up bro! Bike is WAY nicer in person , Allen did a great job on it. The rephase argument is dumb as shit. They’re all a money pit, do what you want and screw what anybody thinks. Keep choppin man, I’ll be back down to kick it with you soon

  14. mike lytle says:

@ Bill……..not having an “ARGUMENT” just a conversation……conversations end up giving both sides of the conversation a perspective……my way or the highway never really gets much done……….

  15. Hugh says:

Alan, It was killer having a hand in this build. Great bike, and a cool dude who put it all together! Thanks again Alan, see ya at the next event….

    Hugh

been loving this bike for a long time. Can’t wait to see your knuck on the road.

  17. Re-phasing xs650’s is the way to go, the reduced vibration and sweet exhaust note are reason enough, plus the added hp and rpm’s doesn’t hurt either. Hugh rephased my crank and cam which we combined with a big bore kit and 5th gear overdrive and you could not beat the smile off my face when I ride this thing! It hammers! I haven’t had it on a dyno yet, but I think it would easily beat a late model 270 triumph for hp and they are a 900! But the figures on that motor in stock spec are surprisingly low. Fanoboss, if you like your motor now, you will love it once it’s re-phased! Just ask Hugh how much engine and re-phase work he is putting out. The man does quality work.
