Max - I saw an xs650 chopper at the skatepark and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I went home and found this website and started my addiction. Turns out my Dad gave an xs650 to his friend when I was born 20 years ago and was just sitting outside the past 10 years. Him being a good friend and because it was just sitting and rotting he gave me the bike last spring. The same time I got it my license had just gotten suspended so I went right into chopping and customizing it. Continue Reading →

Ric - This is my 76 XS650.  Matching numbers and mostly stock.  I’ve done everything I can to resist cutting this one up but a little powder coating to make her look good never hurts.  Thought you might post her just to remind people these bikes looked pretty sweet back in the day.

In short bought as a part exchange to shift a bike no longer desired with the aim of converting it to a “Bobber” though retaining the Ethos of both the original Yamaha concept  and a Bobber, hence softail. This has taken 8 months to complete though bought as a runner with very low mileage. This is now known as the “Alley cat” and thanks to my Brother, as without his fabricating skills it would have taken a lot longer, all part of my 50th Birthday celebrations.

Ross - I started with a 1979 Yamaha xs650 special that I picked up for $200. After install the new brushes for the alternator correctly ( not shorting out against the cover) the bike started up and ran good. After that I completely tore the bike apart and started building it back up. Started with extending the swing arm and mounting an R1 monoshock.  I went with the monoshock because you see a lot of the hard tail xs650’s running around and wanted mine to look different. I took the front wheel off of a 1979 Yamaha xs750 that was an 18” rim and machined hubs out of 6” of solid aluminum to mount the originally sprocket and rotor to and fit the new swing arm. A new custom length chain and new tire finished off the swing arm. Hand formed tail section around a integrated 2006 R1 tail light rounded out the rear body work.  Continue Reading →

Chris - This project started as a 1982 XS650 Heritage Special, basically the only thing retained was the frame neck and front lower half of the frame, along with the engine of-course. This is a one off frame designed and built by us requiring hours of rolling and bending tubing to decide on the final look of the bike. The seat’s suspension system was also made from scratch along with almost everything else on this bike (also all done in-house).
